Jim Sloan, Senior Director, Technology

Jim Sloan is Senior Director, Technology for Dow Jones Indexes. He oversees and directs the business application development and engineering of technical solutions for Dow Jones Indexes, including all systems and applications that calculate and distribute index data, reporting systems and website technology. Mr. Sloan has served in his current position since March 2004.

Mr. Sloan first joined Dow Jones in May 1995 as a Programmer Analyst. Soon after transferring to the Dow Jones Global Indexes real-time team, he participated in the development of software to disseminate the Dow Jones Industrial Average to the Chicago Board of Trade for the launch of options and futures on The Dow in 1997. In 1998, Mr. Sloan led the development effort to expand the real-time calculation application from an equities-only platform to include futures contracts in support of the Dow Jones-UBS Commodity Index. As the Indexes business has grown, he and his group have expanded calculation and support of index products from just a handful to hundreds of unique index products, calculating more than 130,000 indexes and disseminating more than 1,600 of these in real-time.

Prior to joining Dow Jones, Mr. Sloan held engineering positions at M&M Mars and Brandt, Inc. developing real-time software for money handling equipment and systems. Before that, he worked at Commodore Computers administering networks and servers.

Mr. Sloan has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University with concentrations in computers and mathematics. He resides in Newtown, Pa., with his wife, Sharon, and two children, Joshua and Gabrielle.
