First Futures And Options On Global Blue Chip Equity Index
New York/Frankfurt (Mar. 14, 2001) — Eurex, the international derivatives exchange, and Dow Jones Indexes, a global index provider, have agreed that Eurex will list futures and options on the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 index. Eurex will become the world’s first exchange to list derivatives on a global blue chip index.
The introduction of futures and options on a global blue chip equity index on April 23, 2001 complements Eurex’s existing national and European offerings (DAX, SMI, Nemax 50, Dow Jones STOXX 50 and Dow Jones Euro STOXX 50) and is a direct response to investor demand for global products.
Global investing is becoming an important and clear trend as the number of global funds tripled over the last five years. The number of financial institutions introducing products on the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 index is steadily increasing, causing market participants to seek additional trading and hedging instruments.
“Eurex is extremely successful with derivatives based on indexes,” said Eurex-CEO Rudolf Ferscha. “Last year’s trading in the Dow Jones index family, such as the Dow Jones STOXX indexes, was the most successful ever. By offering futures and options based on the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 we further extend our range of products covering a monetary region and sectors with a global product.”
David E. Moran, president of Dow Jones Indexes, said: “In licensing the index for futures and options we were looking for an exchange that would bring unparalleled worldwide investor access to futures and options based on the Dow Jones Global Titans 50. With over 454 million contracts traded last year and 431 market participants from 17 countries, Eurex is by far the world’s leading international derivatives exchange, and an ideal partner for us.”
Eurex is the world’s leading derivatives market. Trading on Eurex is cross-border and offers members access from any location in the world. The members are linked to the Eurex system via a communications network with trading taking place on the Eurex electronic trading platform, which also integrates all subsequent clearing functions. A total of 431 participants from 16 European countries and the United States are currently linked to Eurex. Eurex is not just the world’s largest derivatives market, it also has the largest network of participants worldwide.
